Vegetable - Cabbage & Kadala Paruppu

This is a simple and popular side dish which has the goodness of protein along with the vegetable. In India, side dishes complement the gravy served with rice. This dry vegetable is a perfect accompaniment with any Rasam or Curds/Buttermilk. Mixed with rice and ghee - it tastes just great! It also can accompany Phulka/Chapathi.

Cabbage & Kadalparuppu Masala

Serves 3-4


Cabbage ¼ kg, chop into small cubes

Channa dal 4 tbsp

Tomatoes 2, chopped fine

Turmeric powder ¼ tsp

Sambar powder 1 tsp

Chilli powder ½ tsp

Salt to taste

Oil 2 tbsp

Fennel seeds ¼ tsp

Curry leaves 1 sprig


Soak channa dal (kadalaparuppu) for 10 to 15 minutes. Cook until just done.

Heat oil in a kadai and put fennel seeds (saunf) and curry leaves.

Add the tomatoes, turmeric powder, chilli powder, sambhar powder and salt. Stir cook over a medium flame until pulpy.

Add cabbage and dal. Sauté until well mixed. Keep over medium flame and cook until the vegetable absorbs the masala. Stir in between.

Spoon ½ tsp oil towards the end, stir cook on high and take off heat.

Serve hot.
