Waffles - Dutch

A waffle is a batter or dough based cake cooked in a Waffle Iron, patterned to give a distinctive and characteristic shape. Waffles were first introduced to North America in 1620 by Pilgrims who brought the method from Holland. Thomas Jefferson brought a waffle iron from France, and waffle frolics or parties became popular in the late eighteenth century. Belgian waffles are prepared with Yeast-leavened batter. Belgian waffles were introduced to America by restaurateur Maurice Vermersch, who sold his Brussels waffles under the name "Bel-Gem Waffles" at New York's 1964 World's Fair. - Wikipedia. This recipe came with my waffle machine.



All-Purpose Flour 140 grams

Sugar 45 grams

Salt a pinch

Softened Butter 60 grams

Beaten Egg 1

Milk 250 ml

Baking Powder ¼ tsp


Take flour in a bowl. Mix in sugar and salt. Make a well in the center and add softened butter and beaten egg. Mix well and gradually add milk to obtain a batter of pouring consistency. Stir in baking powder and rest for ½ hour.

Pre-heat waffle iron and brush with melted butter. Pour batter into the lower waffle plate. Close cover and cook for 4 minutes.

Breakfast - Serve hot, topped with melted butter and maple syrup.

As a Dessert - Serve with Ice-cream and toppings of your choice.
