Chaturthi Special - Pillaiyarpatti Modakam

We have a custom of invoking Ganesha, also known as Pillaiyar in the South, for a very auspicious beginning and the removal of every obstacle in our path. So also my Aayah (maternal G.ma) advised me to take up 'Vratham' (fasting) for Chathurthi, soon after my marriage. It is observed for a calender year starting from one Vinayaka Chathurti to the next. On completion of the 12 months, we end the vratham by partaking in the festivities in Pillaiyarpatti. "Modakam" is the Prasdham offered at Pillaiyarpatti.
Once on a monthly fast Apattha (Paternal G.ma) made this one for me, and to date I am yet to taste one so soft and delicious.

Ingredients:
Rice Rava - 1 cup
Jaggery - 1 cup
Water - 3.5 cups, divided
Coconut - 3 Tbsp, grated
Cashew nuts - 2 Tbsp
Kismis (Raisins) - 2 tbsp
Ghee - 2 Tbsp

Instructions:
Take 1 cup of water in a pan and add jaggery to it. Stir cook until it melts. Strain and keep aside.
Heat ghee in a kadai and fry cashew nuts and raisins separately. Keep aside.
In the same pan, bring the remaining water to a boil.
Stir in the rice rava and cook over a slow flame until almost all the water has evaporated.
Mix in the jaggery syrup and continue cooking till dry.
Add in the raisins, cashew nuts and grated coconut. Mix well to combine.
Shape into slightly oval shaped balls.
Steam cook for 5 minutes.
