Kariveppilai Thuvayal made as mentioned here without coconut is strong and pungent, hence portion per person is much smaller.
Oil - 1 Tbsp
Urad Dal - 2 Tbsp
Dry Red Chillies - 2
Green Chillies - 2
Ginger - 1/2", chopped
Garlic - 1 flake
Tamarind - 1/2" piece
Onion - 1
Tomato - 1
Curry Leaves - 1 fistful of leaves
Salt to taste
Heat oil and add the urad dal first. When it changes colour, add onions and saute.
Add chillies, garlic, ginger and tamarind.
Stir fry over a medium flame.
Then add tomatoes and saute until it has wilted a little.
Add curry leaves and fry until glossy all over.Cool slightly and grind, adding salt to taste; using very little water to a thick and smooth paste.
