Chow-Chow Poriyal

I know! This post sure does not reflect the fact that I had participated in Aparna's Photography Workshop! She took us through the various aspects of photography and was a mine of information. Whatever I had read in her blog made more sense now. I enjoyed every minute, and was happy to meet so many blogger friends in person. We left Kettle Tea House with a Goodie Bag from Urban Dazzle. Thank You Aparna!!!

This one has been in the drafts for so long and I decided that it should see light. Generally we use Chow-Chow (Chayote) to make Sambhar or Kootu. Try this Poriyal and you will be hooked. Yes! I have been :-)
Off to the recipe without much ado---

Ingredients:
Chow-Chow - 1, large
Small Onions - 5
Oil - 2 tsp
Mustard - 1/4 tsp
Urad Dal - 1/4 tsp
Dry Red Chillies - 2, broken
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Coconut, grated - 2 Tbsp

Instructions:
Peel and halve the Chow-Chow to remove the stone from the centre. Chop into cubes.
Boil the cubed vegetable in enough water with salt to taste. Cook until firm. Drain and keep aside.
Peel and halve the small onions.
Heat oil in a Kadai and season with mustard seeds and dal. Add curry leaves and broken chillies.
Now, add the onions and saute until it changes colour. Add a little salt.
Then, add in boiled vegetable and stir fry until the seasoned oil coats the vegetable all over.
Stir in grated coconut.
Serve Hot.

This is a perfect accompaniment for a Spicy Kuzhambu!
